On May 4, 1864, General Grant kicked off his Overland Campaign by sending George Meade's Army of the Potomac into the tangled Wilderness maze near the old Chancellorsville battlefield of the year before. Here the Union force of 100,000 plus encoutered Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, numbering only 65,000.

Unfortunately for Grant, the dense, matted Wilderness undergrowth cancelled his numerical advantage. And unfortunately for Union wounded, the dry forest was soon ablaze with numerous fires, and when the armies pulled apart on May 7, many of those undiscovered wounded were horrifically burned alive.
