In 1854, a general service button was specified to all enlisted men to simplify button procurement. The eagle device is similar to earlier buttons, but no letters are on the shield. The preponderance of Union Army buttons found in Civil War camps and battlefields are of this type. All of these buttons are Civil War period non-dug buttons and they have shanks attached. They are of various backmarks.

The General Staff had an executive role in the Federal Army. After the reorganization of 1836, officers adopted a distinctive "staff" type button. The button shows an eagle with tail, wings, and neck extended from the body on a lined field. The eagle's head faces toward the right, with wing tips pointing upward. In one talon, the raptor holds three to six arrows, while he grips an olive branch with the other. A shield is present at the center and a ring of 21 to 30 stars surrounds the eagle. All buttons have attached shanks and are assorted various backmarks.
(M17528) $35.00 EACH
In the 1880 most army units had buttons with a distinctive design. In 1821 officials decided to use a button showing an eagle over a shield with a simple letter I on the shield. Enlisted men used the design until 1854 when it was replaced by the general service button without the letter I. Infantry officers continued to use the old style during the Civil War. All buttons are non-dug Civil War era, and have the shank attached. They are of various backmarks.
