This Civil War leather accoutrement is a very good specimen of a Confederate made revolver belt holster as worn by many officers and mounted troops. Considered part of the equipment of southern cavalry, this 15" long revolver holster with outer flap was machine produced and appears to fit the pattern and configuration for large caliber percussion sidearms, namely a 44 caliber size Colt or a similar sized weapon.
A classic example, it bears no maker's mark and is ruggedly constructed of black bridle leather in very good condition overall. The leather artifact has three major components; main body, bottom plug and closure loop. Body is cut from a single, large piece of thick leather that is folded over and machined stitched together to form the pocket. The outer flap and long closure tab are integral to the one-piece body. Tab is strong but supple with not rips or tears. Original stitching is strong and tight. Holster is missing its bottom plug. Entire exterior leather surface is well used but strong with moderate to heavy surface crazing and minor cracking. Piece exhibits some edge scuffing with scattered tiny areas of thinning. Stitched to the backside of holster is a sturdy black bridle leather belt loop that measures 3½" long x 1¾" wide. This well constructed, Confederate-made leather accoutrement is in very good condition overall. If one seeks an original CS holster accoutrement, this one would make a great addition to any Confederate display.

The belt measures 39" long and is 1" wide for the entire length save for the wider portion that attaches to the hooks of an oval US plate. These original, black bridle leather sword knots are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain today. Issued to Union horsemen during the war, this completely unmarked leather strap is in excellent condition and comes complete with its full set of tassels. The 1" wide leather loop measures 33" long when unfolded and over 16" long when looped for service on the cavalryman's saber. Remarkably strong yet supple, the knot is held flat together by two plaited leather stays or loops, and exhibits a plaited set of thin tassels at the tip. The tassels appear to have been heavily coated at one time with a sealant similar to Picard, most of which has been removed. The bridle leather knot's smooth surface has an uncracked appearance and is free of any flaking, cracking or tears. As part of the trooper's equipment during battle, the knot was secured to the cavalry saber hilt and then looped around the trooper's wrist. The purpose of the saber knot was to enable the combatant to retain possession of his edged weapon should he receive a blow that loosed the blade from his grip. This is a very excellent saber knot overall and would make a fine addition to any leather collection or Federal cavalry display.
