The belt introduced and used by the Navy in 1862 was made of buff leather and had a japanned iron buckle. Captains of guns, boarders, small arms men and the crews of field howitzers wore them. This example is 54 inches in length and 2 inches wide. It has one leather belt loop. This is the belt on page 217 of the book Echoes of Glory by TIME LIFE.

The buff leather sword belt rig, a beautiful specimen in very fine, original condition, is stamped on the interior by the maker and reads, "MADE BY / R. DINGEE / NEW YORK" in black ink. Belt interior loop reveals a handwritten notation in black ink that is partially legible but very difficult to read. Cursory inspection of the writing indicates the words "Head Quarters / taken from the _____ _____ ______ _____ _____ Hampton / June 3, 1_6_ ". A worthy project for further research.
Leather is remarkably clean with just slight surface grime exhibited. The "S-link" waist belt plate is a regulation 1832 Pattern set of brass discs 1¾" in diameter with a S-link shaped brass wire that interlocks the discs when the belt rig was worn. One disc reflects a raised spreadwinged eagle while its mate disc features a set of raised crossed cannon flanked by embossed block letters "U" and "S", each ¼" high.
This M1832 buff belt rig is a fine original specimen that would make a wonderful addition to any display or collection.
