Here is a choice example of an original United Confederate Veteran's suspension badge as worn by its members at the UCV Reunion in Memphis, Tennessee on June 8-10, 1909. Reddish bronze-colored metal was used to produce this fine, two-piece suspension badge device. The top piece of this wonderful badge resembles a wide-brimmed bowler's hat and features a pair of crossed Confederate battle flags (St Andrew's style) in the upper crown. The word "MEMPHIS" in 1/8th" high block letters is found directly below the flags and over the stamped reunion date. A small, circular clip or wire ring is connected to the top piece and suspends the second piece of the badge. This component is a 1" diameter disc embossed with a raised-relief bust view of Confederate General Albert Sydney Johnston. Protruding from the outer edges of the disc are five angled horizontal wedges, each embossed with data on the reunion. They read clockwise from the 7 o'clock position with "19th" / "UNITED" / "CONFEDERATE" / "VETERANS" / "REUNION"." Entire badge measures just over 3" long and was made by the Whitehead and Hoag Company of Newark, New Jersey. A very attractive and distinct looking badge device that would make a wonderful addition to any Civil War insignia display or United Confederate Veteran military collection.

Nice bust view of Joseph Mills wearing his GAR uniform with kepi. On his chest he wears two medals and two ribbons. One medal is a GAR membership badge with Sgt. Maj. Stripes at the top instead of the standard eagle. He may have been the Sgt. at Arms for his GAR Post. One ribbon can be partially made out to read "Detroit" at top and at middle in large letters "Berdan's." The other ribbon has a large metal pin at top with GAR in a scroll but the rest is too faint to make out. Photographers mark is "M. A. Murdoch, Windsor, Ont." Windsor, Ont. Is just across the US Canadian border from Detroit. Mills probably had this photo taken at the Detroit reunion. Back has photographers imprint and in pen is "Joseph Mills." Photo is in good condition with light surface aging. Item comes with partial pension records.
Joseph Mills was 27 years old and living in Hopkinton, New Hampshire when he enlisted as a Private in Co. F, 2nd Regt. U.S.S.S. He became ill in late 1861 and was discharged for disability on March 24, 1862. He was born in Weare and lived in Douglass, Mass. after the war.
