US 3" TYPE II HOTCHKISS COMMON SHELL - RECOVERED AT REYNOLDS' WOODS, GETTYSBURG

US 3" TYPE II HOTCHKISS COMMON SHELL - RECOVERED AT REYNOLDS' WOODS, GETTYSBURG.

Here is an original, Federal 3" Type 2 Hotchkiss Common Shell recovered at Reynold's Woods shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg. This wonderful Gettysburg relic is complete with its lead band sabot, brass Hotchkiss fuse adapter and iron base cup intact. Used primarily in the 3" Ordnance Rifle, this type projectile was purchased in larger numbers than any other in the Hotchkiss series. The tip of the nose is slightly more blunt than the previous common shell. Three, deep, flame grooves cut through the shell body, sabot and base, greatly weakening the piece and causing many to be found missing sabot and base cup. The projectile measures 6.75" long, has a diameter of 2.94" and weighs 8 pounds, 9 oz. The Hotchkiss Time Fuse Adapter is the brass version with the screwdriver slot and wears a rich dark patina. Lead sabot exhibits moderate distortion and grooving. Shell body is moderately rust pitted. Never cleaned. Exhibits a pleasing brown patina overall. The 3" Hotchkiss shell was recovered from Reynolds' Woods and is identified in John Geiselman's collection by his contemporary inscribed label.

CS 3" MULLANE SABOT PLATE - PITZERS WOODS GETTYSBURG

This artifact is a circular base plate for a Confederate Mullane shell projectile and it was found in Pitzer's Woods area of the Gettysburg battlefield. One part of the Dr. Hill collection here, this saucer-shaped specimen, sometimes referred to as a disc-sabot, is 3" in diameter and is made of brass or copper. Sabot has four, ½" diameter holes drilled through its base with three holes around the outer circumference and one hole in the center. The outer holes aligned the three iron studs or pins on the actual Mullane shell while the center hole in the sabot plate was for the central bolt on the shell. Portion of the saucer-like edge on the sabot has been clipped away but remaining edge is strong. Disc has a small number label "46" still attached to the plate. The 3" sabot plate, found on the Gettysburg battlefield in Pitzer's Woods and part of the Dr. Hill collection, is identified in John Geiselman's museum listing.

US 3" HOTCHKISS CANISTER SABOT FOUND AT LITTLE ROUND TOP

US 3" HOTCHKISS CANISTER SABOT FOUND AT LITTLE ROUND TOP.

Here is a fired and recovered U.S. 3-Inch Hotchkiss Canister Sabot Cup. It was found in relic condition in Gettysburg at the Little Round Top. Moderately pitted and encrusted with orange dirt, it measures approximately 3 inches in diameter and approximately ¾ inches tall. This sabot was made of lead and was ordinarily marked on the bottom with the patent date; the lettering is not readable on this piece. This sabot joined the canister at the groove at the base of the canister. Because this sabot was lead, it took to the rifling of the gun easily; for canisters, this was not good because the iron balls spread rapidly, thereby, reducing short-range effectiveness. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection as found at Little Round Top.

US/CS 12 POUND SMOOTHBORE CANISTER PLATE WITH 7 CANISER SHOT - ZIEGLER COLLECTION, GETTYSBURG.

This specimen of Civil War ammunition consists of the remnants of a 12-pounder smoothbore stand of canister gathered from the Gettysburg battlefield. Originally from the Ziegler Collection, this early pick up includes one plate together with seven, separate iron canister shot or balls, all in fine original condition. A very common explosive shell used in the Civil War, canister was usually called for in breaking up opposing charging infantry and proved an efficient piece of artillery projectile. The circular-shaped, iron plate measures 4" in diameter and is slightly scalloped to cradle the first level of seven, 1.5" diameter iron balls. Six of the seven canister balls are still tightly secured to the base via residue of the packing compound. All iron pieces retain a light coating of surface rust. Never cleaned. This canister ammunition is an early battlefield pickup from the Ziegler collection in Gettysburg and the item is identified in John Geiselman's museum collection.

PINCHERS FOUND NEAR THE WEIKERT HOUSE

PINCHERS FOUND NEAR THE WEIKERT HOUSE

Here is a nice hand tool probably used by Artillerymen to fix sabots, or was possibly used by a blacksmith. STANDOUT CONFEDERATE SPUR - EAST CAVALRY FIELD

STANDOUT CONFEDERATE SPUR - EAST CAVALRY FIELD

Found on the 1863 East Cavalry Field in Gettysburg shortly after the battle, this brass spur is an excavated specimen of Southern cavalry horse equipment in remarkable, standout condition. This large-size spur is unusual in that it appears to have characteristics of the "Brandy" style body together with a "Richmond" style neck. Strong and well made, the brass spur still retains its original, iron, 10-point star rowel that rotates freely in the neck. Artifact measures 5¼" long with a 3¼" width. Never cleaned. This rebel spur exhibits light surface dirt and has a light patina overall. One shank corner appears to have been hammered around a square heeled boot. A wonderful, early pickup from the East Cavalry Field after the Battle of Gettysburg, this rebel cavalry spur is identified in John Geiselman's collection by his contemporary inscribed label.

U.S. PATTERN 1861 .58 CAL. CARTRIDGE BOX - SPANGLER'S SPRING & NERBERT OLIER COLLECTION. POSSIBLE CONFEDERATE USE

U.S. PATTERN 1861 .58 CAL. CARTRIDGE BOX - SPANGLER'S SPRING & NERBERT OLIER COLLECTION. POSSIBLE CONFEDERATE USE.

This model 1861 cartridge box is in good condition with light storage dirt over the entire surface. All seams on the box are very good. Both belt loops and sling loops are present, as are both roller buckles at bottom. The brass finial is also present. Implement pocket is complete but a bit stiff. There is some dryness on the pocket latch tab with severe surface crackling. The lip of the pocket is slightly curled. The inner flap has some light surface crackling over its outer surface. One of the side "ears" is curled under. Flap is marked "Smith, Bourn & Co. Hartford." This company had a contract dated September 6, 1862 for 10,000 sets of .58 and .69 cal infantry accouterments. Both tins are present but one tin is missing its top layer. The interesting thing about this box and what makes it possibly Confederate used is that the outer flap has been cut off. This is something we have seen before on Confederate used boxes and it is doubtful that a Federal soldier would be allowed to cut up his cartridge box. This cartridge box is from the Nerbert Olier collection and was found at Spangler's Spring. Artifact is identified on John Geiselman's museum listing.

Inner flap, implement pocket, body of box, sling and belt loops are all excellent. Both roller buckles as well as finial are present. Inside box is one tin, the other one is missing. MARKED UNION CAVALRY BUGLE FROM GETTYSBURG

MARKED UNION CAVALRY BUGLE FROM GETTYSBURG

This truly, one of a kind, Civil War artifact is a coveted, Federal cavalry bugle found on East Cavalry Field at Gettysburg shortly after the battle. Once a part of the old Danner Museum, this remarkable brass musical instrument is adorned near the bell horn with the words "CAVALERY FIGHT ." hand-painted with gold paint in ½" high letters. The single looped bugle exhibits a tapered stem that retains a number of small to medium sized dents and dings overall. Bellhorn has been just slightly flattened and shows creases but is still tight and intact. Body of bugle wears a gorgeous, rich, chocolate brown patina overall but is missing its mouthpiece, long gone. No maker markings visible. Never cleaned. Sans the mouthpiece, instrument measures approximately 12½" long with a 4½" wide bell. From the East Cavalry Field portion of the Gettysburg Battlefield, to the old Danner Museum, to John Geiselman's collection, this wartime cavalry bugle "saw the elephant" at Gettysburg. This cavalry artifact was part of the Geiselman collection and is identified by contemporary inscribed labels.

MODEL 1858 BULLSEYE CANTEEN - CEMETERY HILL/ MEADES HEADQUARTERS AREA.

This model 1858 bullseye canteen was picked up soon after the battle in the area between Meade's Headquarters and Cemetery Hill. The body of the canteen has a rich dark patina and very little surface rust if any. One side has an area near the center of sky blue paint. This is in a somewhat circular pattern but is NOT believed to be a Corps insignia. There is also a moderate sized dent in this area that meas. approx. 2 inches across. The opposite side shows no signs of any dents. All three sling keepers are present. The bottom keeper has an old repair done to it and there are two holes in this area. One hole meas. approx. ½ inch in diameter and the other is approx. ¼ inch. Pewter spout is marked "C H & Co." which stands for the maker Code, Hopper & Co. This company had Army contracts to manufacture canteens in 1861, 1862 and another contract for only 7,200 corrugated canteens on June 12, 1863. This Model 1858 smoothside canteen has a nice patina over the entire body. All three sling keepers are present and the spout is made of pewter. The spout is unusual in that it seems to be a little taller than is normally seen. One side of the canteen has three slight indentations while the opposite side has one that is very small. The stopper on this canteen is missing but would have been held in place by the use of a string instead of a chain, as there is no hole on the sling keeper to indicate a chain was present.
