U.S. 3" PARROTT SHELL FROM THE WHEATFIELD, GETTYSBURG

U.S. 3" PARROTT SHELL FROM THE WHEATFIELD, GETTYSBURG

This very desirable, Federal 3" Parrott artillery projectile, sometimes referred to as a sub-pattern #1, was recovered from the Wheatfield soon after the horrific fighting there during the Battle of Gettysburg. This fine specimen is intact with its original Parrott percussion, zinc fuse adapter and its wrought iron sabot cup. Designed by Robert P. Parrott in August 1861, the shell was used with the 10 pounder Parrott rifle of 2.9" caliber and designated a sub-pattern # 1. Shell measures 8.75" long, has a diameter of 2.86" and weighs almost 9 pounds. This example is in very good condition and wears a rich, dark brown patina overall. Shell, in fine condition, exhibits some light surface rust pitting with little surface dirt. Rifling grooves visible on the sabot cup. Here is a wonderful representative projectile from the fierce fighting at the Wheatfield at Gettysburg. John Geiselman's contemporary inscribed labels identify the artillery specimen in his collection.

US 3" HOTCHKISS SHELL - FOUND ROSE FARM GETTYSBURG

US 3" HOTCHKISS SHELL - FOUND ROSE FARM GETTYSBURG

This fine specimen of Civil War artillery is the nose section of a Type 2 Hotchkiss common shell found in a run on the Rose farm shortly after the Battle of Gettysburg. Designed by a invalid Connecticut inventor and once part of the Lester Little Collection, this type of projectile was purchased in larger numbers than any other Hotchkiss series during the war. The example here retains its brass type 2 fuse adapter, but is missing the lead sabot and the iron shell base. Nose section measures 5.5" long by 3" in diameter and exhibits three deep flame grooves cut vertically down the sides of the shell. Made for the 3" Ordnance Rifle, this round was never cleaned and wears just light surface dirt with a dark rich patina. A fine Hotchkiss shell, still in strong, tight condition, was found at the Rose Farm at Gettysburg and is identified in John Geiselman's collection by museum listing.

US BORMAN FUSE FOUND AT BARLOW'S KNOLL, GETTYSBURG

US BORMAN FUSE FOUND AT BARLOW'S KNOLL, GETTYSBURG

Here is a very nice U.S. Borman time fuse. It was found in relic condition in Gettysburg at the Barlow's Knoll. Very light surface grime, it still has some dirt adhering. It measures 1.6 inches in diameter, has double wrench slots with the numbers still visible (except number "2"), and has been set for 1 ½ seconds using a square headed Borman tool. It is very rare to find a fuse set with a Borman tool; the artillerymen often used a woodworker's implement as they found it easier to use. The screws are all intact and this fuse could even now be screwed into a shell. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing.

US MODEL 1855 SOCKET BAYONET FOUND ON THE ROSE FARM - GETTYSBURG

US MODEL 1855 SOCKET BAYONET FOUND ON THE ROSE FARM - GETTYSBURG

Here is a U.S. Model 1855 Socket Bayonet. It was found in relic condition in Gettysburg on the Rose Farm. Moderately pitted with some rust, the blade measures approximately 17 ½ inches long, 21 inches overall. The locking ring is missing; hence, it is unknown whether this is a type 1 or 2. The pitting prevents identification of the markings on the blade face. During the Civil War, over a million and one half Model 1855 .58 caliber muskets were produced and with them, a musket such as this was part of the "stand." The National Armories and a few contractors produced this type bayonet. This piece was identified as from John Geiselman's collection.

US .69 CALIBER SOCKET BAYONET FOUND AT THE LLOYD SNYDER FARM - GETTYSBURG

US .69 CALIBER SOCKET BAYONET FOUND AT THE LLOYD SNYDER FARM - GETTYSBURG.

This is a very nice .69 caliber 1835/1840 Musket Bayonet used with the Model 1842 Musket. John Geiselman found it in relic condition in Gettysburg in the woods near the 3rd Corps Hospital on the Lloyd Snyder Farm. Very lightly pitted and, unfortunately, lightly cleaned by John, the blade measures 18 ½ inches long, 20 ½ inches overall. The locking ring is missing. The blade face is stamped with a small "C" centered over a heavy large "US". Some 275,000 Model 1842 Muskets were produced from 1843 to 1855; the vast majority of these saw extensive service during the Civil War. This bayonet was most likely used with that production. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing.

ENFIELD PATTERN 1853 SOCKET BAYONET FOUND ON EAST CEMETERY HILL, GETTYSBURG

This is a very nice English Enfield Pattern 1853 Rifle-musket Socket Bayonet. John Geiselman purchased it from the Pitzer Collection; it was found in relic condition in Gettysburg on East Cemetery Hill. Very lightly pitted, the blade measures approximately 17 ½ inches long, 20 ½ inches overall. The locking ring is still attached. The pitting prevents identification of the markings on the blade face. During the Civil War, thousands of arms were imported by the C.S. and U.S., particularly from England. The appropriate bayonet was included with the firearm. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing.

US M1840 CAVALRY SABER - FROM BATTLE AT FAIRFIELD

US M1840 CAVALRY SABER - FROM BATTLE AT FAIRFIELD

Dropped or discarded sometime during the June / July 1863 cavalry fight in the battle at Fairfield, this wartime edged weapon is a Federal Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber a.k.a. the Wristbreaker to the troopers who carried it. This artifact, once part of the Rinedollar Collection, was found at an undisclosed location in Fairfield shortly after the battle and is complete with its original scabbard and even a piece of the leather sword strap still attached to the scabbard upper suspension ring. The full-length blade is unmarked at the ricasso and appears to have been cleaned at one time. Weapon retains its full brass hilt and pommel, both strong, tight and exhibiting a pleasing, dark, chocolate patina and still has the original black bridle leather pad in place at the hilt but now split. Pommel is distinctive and resembles that of a Horstmann enlisted pattern. Grips are carved wood, minus all leather wrap, but it retain portions of twisted 22 gauge brass wire. No markings visible on the pommel. Steel scabbard is strong and undented and has both suspension rings, mounts and a thick 'Philadelphia-style' drag. The upper ring retains its original, short leather sword strap that measures some 14" overall. Strap is looped through the ring and secured by one of its large brass rivets. Scabbard has acquired just a light coating of surface rust and grime. A fantastic battlefield pickup from the Fairfield cavalry fight near at Gettysburg, this unidentified edged weapon is identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing.

US BRIDLE BIT FOUND ON EAST CAVALRY FIELD, GETTYSBURG.

Here, in excellent condition, is a Model 1859 U.S. Cavalry Bridle Bit. It was found in relic condition in Gettysburg on the East Cavalry Field. John Geiselman purchased it for his collection from the Sharrett's Collection. Very lightly pitted, it must have been recovered soon after the Battle. BULLET-IN-WOOD - EAST CAVALRY FIELD GETTYSBURG

A Federal regulation .58 caliber minie ball 'bullet in wood' specimen from East Cavalry Field at Gettysburg. This battlefield artifact was recovered in July 1929 and it still carries its original paper label (3" x 1") glued to the top portion of the wood log. In typed form, label reads "Bullet / found in piece of wood / on E. Cavalry Field July 1929."
