The following group is composed of cabinet card images of monuments and locations on the Gettysburg battlefield, taken by well known Gettysburg photographer William H. Tipton. The majority have his photographer's mark on the bottom border of each mount, except where noted. Each image measures approximately 5" x 7 1/4", on a 5 1/4" x 8 1/2" mount.
William H. Tipton (1850-1929) was a photographer's apprentice with Tyson Brothers at the age of 12, and assisted in recording views of Gettysburg just after the battle. He later became Charles Tyson's partner until 1880, when he purchased Tyson's portion of the business. In addition to monument views, he also photographed tourists and returning veterans, as well as the buildings and students of Gettysburg College, the majority of which were taken in the from 1870's onward. Tipton ran a photography studio right on the battlefield at the base of Devil's Den in an area known as Tipton Park. Tipton is buried in Gettysburg's Evergreen Cemetery.
