FEDERAL, FIRST PATTERN, PERCUSSION CAP BOX GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD

FEDERAL, FIRST PATTERN, PERCUSSION CAP BOX - GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD

This black leather, US percussion cap box is an outstanding example of a pickup from the Gettysburg battlefield within days or weeks of the famous battle. In excellent condition, this scarce, unmarked, leather accoutrement appears to be of the early pattern manufactured ca. 1848. Piece exhibits only seam stitching which is still strong and tight and a total lack of brass or copper rivets in the construction. Also, the pear-shaped, brass finial is located at the bottom FRONT FACE of the box and not on the bottom as in later Civil War construction. The black bridle leather is still in remarkably strong condition and exhibits light to moderate surface cracking with some crazing and a few spots of surface scuffing. Not sunken or misshapen. Accoutrement retains both 'ears' or side covers on the inner flap. Box has its wool fleece pad but the wool and nipple pick are long gone. Backside of this box has one original, leather vertical belt loop and one modern replacement sewn on. Never cleaned. A Gettysburg battlefield artifact, this scarce, early first-pattern percussion cap box was picked up from the Gettysburg battlefield within days or weeks of the battle and is identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing.

C.S. "FAYETTEVILLE' SABRE BAYONET FROM CEMETERY HILL GETTYSBURG

C.S. "FAYETTEVILLE' SABRE BAYONET FROM CEMETERY HILL GETTYSBURG

Here is a massive Confederate 'Fayetteville' type sabre bayonet found after a fire in a local barn on Cemetery Hill on the Gettysburg battlefield. This heavy artifact, once part of the Flohr Collection, exhibits a cast brass grip and guard that appears to be one piece. Grips have a distinctive fish-scale design and the guard is missing the ring portion that would attach to the rifle's muzzle, probably the result of a bullet strike. Also missing is the spring-latch release mechanism at the top of the grips. This standard bayonet measures 26½" long overall with the blade portion at 21½" long. No markings are visible on blade or grips. The steel blade, thick and heavy, has an unstopped fuller and exhibits a prominent "S" shaped curvature, most likely caused by the effects of tremendous heat from the barn fire. Never cleaned, this rebel edged weapon exhibits a pleasing dark brown patina with just a hint of light surface dirt and rust to the exterior. A Gettysburg battlefield artifact, this Fayetteville sabre bayonet specimen was recovered after a fire in a barn on Cemetery Hill and is identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing.

TRAY OF RELICS FROM THE DAVID PLANK FARM ALONG THE TANEYTOWN ROAD, GETTYSBURG

TRAY OF RELICS FROM THE DAVID PLANK FARM ALONG THE TANEYTOWN ROAD, GETTYSBURG

This is a nice grouping of various type relics. They were found in relic condition in Gettysburg on the David Plank Farm along Taneytown Road. Included in this grouping are bullets, fuse parts, buckles, and other miscellaneous parts. There are twelve bullets: six three ring U.S. .58 caliber (dropped and fired), one .69 caliber ball, one .577 caliber Enfield bullet, and a few .54 caliber rifle musket bullets. Most of the bullets are lead colored most likely from being recovered soon after the Battle. This tray includes two fuse fragments: one an unidentified percussion type with safety wire still attached (possibly an Archer) and a screwdriver slot CS time fuse adapter. There are three small buckles, two roller type and one non-roller, most likely from cartridge box cases. Two small ornamental tin/brass plate segments are included; one approximately 2 inches by 1 ½ inches, the other 3 inches by ¾ inches. The last item is a brass cartridge box button with fragments of leather still adhering. These relics are housed on an unmarked pottery oval dish approximately 7 ½ inches by 5 inches. These items were identified from John Geiselman's collection with a handwritten 3 inch by ¾ inch tag that states "FROM / DAVID PLANKS FARM / ALONG TANEYTOWN ROAD" in three lines.

SHELL FRAGMENT IMBEDDED IN BARN BEAM FROM FORNEY'S BARN ON OAK RIDGE, GETTYSBURG

SHELL FRAGMENT IMBEDDED IN BARN BEAM FROM FORNEY'S BARN ON OAK RIDGE, GETTYSBURG

Here is a unique, interesting, and outstanding piece of Gettysburg history. It is a shell fragment embedded in a section of the barn beam from Forney's Barn on Oak Ridge. It was recovered not far from the site of the old Peace Light Inn along Mummasburg Road. This barn beam section measures 7 inches high by 5 inches deep by 6 inches wide and shows signs of being hand honed on three sides. U.S. Artillery probably fired this shell fragment at some of General Iverson's North Carolinian Brigade on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. About 2:30 PM on July 1st, 1863, Iverson's Brigade crossed Forney's field unknowingly into a barrage of Union Artillery fire and, later, a wall of musket fire. This relic is most likely a result of that attack. An early Tipton photograph (5 ½ inches by 8 ½ inches) of the 16th Maine Infantry Monument on Reynolds's Avenue showing the Forney's Barn in the background accompanies this barn beam. Forney's Barn no longer exists but the site is easily accessible on the Battlefield. The embedded shell fragment measures approximately 1 inch by 1-½ inches. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing. It would make an excellent and unusual addition to a Gettysburg and/or Civil War collection or display.

BULLET IN WOOD FOUND AT EVERGREEN CEMETERY - GETTYSBURG

Here is a unique and interesting piece of Gettysburg history. It is a bullet embedded in a piece of wood; it was recovered in Gettysburg at Evergreen Cemetery. The bullet type is deformed and unidentifiable and the wood shows signs of having grown around the bullet. This piece of wood measures a split and cut 5 ¾ inches by 3 inches and 2 inches. John Geiselman's museum listing identifies the wood as Mulberry but, to that, we are uncertain. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing. It is very attractive and would make an excellent addition to a Gettysburg Civil War collection and display.

Lightly pitted from being buried with some dirt still adhering, the coin grades a conservative VF25 by American Numismatic Association standards but is downgraded slightly for being pitted. The entire obverse and reverse designs are readily identifiable. The "With Rays" feature is very scarce and only known for two years (1866,1867) of this type coin's design (1866-1883). Although a post-Civil War coin, a coin with this amount of wear would have circulated for about five years before being dropped on the Battlefield, making it in the early 1870's. It could have been dropped by a veteran returning to the battlefield, a tourist, local resident, or ?
