CONFEDERATE 4.52 INCH 12-POUND SPHERICAL SHOT FOUND ON THE TROSTLE FARM - GETTYSBURG

CONFEDERATE 4.52 INCH 12-POUND SPHERICAL SHOT FOUND ON THE TROSTLE FARM - GETTYSBURG

Here is a very nice Confederate 4.52-inch solid spherical shot. It was found in relic condition in Gettysburg on the Trostle Farm; its provenance is from the David Plank Collection. Very lightly pitted, it weighs 12 pounds, is unfused, and was meant to be fired from a 12-pounder smooth bore gun. Solid-shot rounds were fired to ricochet from one target to another thereby causing extensive damage. The mold seam, which distinguishes it as Confederate, is very distinct on this shot. There are several small indentations probably from being fired. This shot comes with a very nicely made old cupped wooden base. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by a contemporary tag and would make a great display piece for an artillery, Civil War, or Gettysburg collection.

C.S. 4.52" 12-POUND SPHERICAL CASE-SHOT, LEAD SIDE-LOADER SHELL FROM BIG ROUND TOP, GETTYSBURG

C.S. 4.52" 12-POUND SPHERICAL CASE-SHOT, LEAD SIDE-LOADER SHELL FROM BIG ROUND TOP, GETTYSBURG

This original, Confederate 12-pound, spherical case shot, lead side-loader shell was found on Big Round Top at Gettysburg within days or weeks of the battle. Once part of the Weikert Collection, this fine, spherical side-loader projectile is intact and clearly visible on the exterior is a 1" diameter, lead side-loader plug tightly screwed into the shell body. Missing from this spherical shell is its variant time fuse adapter and paper insert. The circular opening for the fuse adapter still exhibits strong threads and a fuse adapter could be easily still fit into the opening. Small, round balls (case shot) were poured into the sideloader until the shell cavity was filled and then sealed with the threaded lead plug. Still visible inside the fuse opening are a number of case shot secured in the black matrix. Never cleaned, this wonderful, CS artillery specimen exhibits a hard, smooth surface and wears a superb brown-plum colored patina overall. This 12-pound spherical sideloader shell, recovered from Big Round Top in Gettysburg, is identified by John Geiselman's collection by his museum listings.

CS 4.52" 12 LB. SPHERICAL SHOT, WITH IMPACT MARKS VISIBILE, FOUND AT DEVIL'S DEN

From the David Plank Collection. This projectile has a large casting flaw on one side; a large "air pocket" formed during the casting process and was exposed from hitting a hard object. Impack marks visible all around the area of the air bubble. A crude seam mold is visible in some areas. The projectile was never cleaned, with just light surface rust. The standard projectil for smoothbore used during the Civil War. When fired on a hard surface it often would ricochet from one target to another. David Plank owned the famous Weikert Farm after the Civil War, which was located behind Little and Big Round Tops.

BULLET IN WOOD FROM BIG ROUND TOP - GETTYSBURG

BULLET IN WOOD FROM BIG ROUND TOP - GETTYSBURG

Here is a unique and interesting piece of Gettysburg history, a bullet embedded in a piece of wood. John Geiselman obtained it from the Henry Bittle Collection; it was recovered on Big Round Top on the Gettysburg Battlefield. The bullet type is unknown but the entry hole is visible with the bullet protruding from the opposite side of the wood approximately 4 ½ inches away. This piece of rectangular shaped wood measures a split and cut 13 inches by 4 ½ inches by 5 inches and appears to be a pinewood. The wood is uncleaned and very attractive; there are some dirt residue and a few wormholes, which give it additional character. U.S. MODEL 1816 SOCKET BAYONET FOUND AT GETTYSBURG

U.S. MODEL 1816 SOCKET BAYONET FOUND AT GETTYSBURG

This is a very nice Model 1816 Musket Bayonet mostly likely used with a .69 caliber conversion musket. John Geiselman obtained it from the Nebert Olier Collection. It was found in relic condition at an unknown location in Gettysburg. Lightly pitted, the blade measures approximately 16 inches long; overall, it measures 19inches with a 3-inch socket. The "T" shaped mortise, which identifies this as a Model 1816, is intact and undamaged; this model variation has no slip ring. There are no visible markings or stampings; the light pitting hides any evidence of such. It has not been cleaned or otherwise fussed with. It has a face flute approximately 7-½ inches long and the socket's bore measures almost 7/8 inches. Production of this model bayonet continued until 1840. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing and would make an excellent display item for a Gettysburg or Civil War collection.

U.S. MODEL 1855 SOCKET BAYONET FOUND ON CULP'S HILL - GETTYSBURG

U.S. MODEL 1855 SOCKET BAYONET FOUND ON CULP'S HILL - GETTYSBURG

Here is a recovered U.S. Model 1855 Socket Bayonet. It was found in relic condition in Gettysburg on Culp's Hill. Moderately pitted with some rust, the blade measures approximately 18 inches long, 21 inches overall. The locking ring is intact and identifies this bayonet as a type 1 with a short slot on the locking ring. The pitting prevents identification of the markings on the blade face. During the Civil War, over a million and one half Model 1855 .58 caliber muskets were produced and with them, a musket such as this was part of the "stand." The National Armories and a few contractors produced this type bayonet. This piece was identified as from John Geiselman's collection by a contemporary tag and would make a nice display item for a Gettysburg or Civil War Collection.

RARE CONFEDERATE KENANSVILLE, NC CAVALRY SABRE REMNANTS FOUND SOUTHEAST OF CULP'S HILL - GETTYSBURG

This item is a rare and unusual Confederate Cavalry Sabre remnant. A product of the Confederate States Armory, an official sounding name but actually a large private enterprise operated by Louis Froelich, this sabre was made sometime from 1862 to1865. This remnant was found in relic condition southeast of Culp's Hill in Gettysburg. It measures approximately 7-½ inches long and consists of the sabre's hilt and ricasso. The Pommel, Knuckle Bow, Quillon, and Ricasso are intact. The leather grip covers and iron strand wire are missing. This relic's origin is readily identified by the curved knuckle bow and the Roman numeral (in this case "II") cut into the side of the guard. The Pommel and Quillon have a few very small old nicks not inconsistent with the condition of this relic. Accompanying it is a typed 4 ¾ inch by 2 3/8 inch heavy paper label with the following words: "C.S. Sword or Sabre Hilt / from The Gettysburg / Battlefield / This relic hilt and blade portion was found many years ago by James Carter on his father's farm along Rock Creek just southeast of Culp's Hill. In 1986 it was given to Joe Harbaugh, and on April 20, 1986 I purchased it from him for $10.00." It is signed in ink by Gregory A. Coco, a well-known Gettysburg author. The tag's reverse has the words: "*Both men have worked at the Gettysburg Nat. Mil. Park for many years. The sword was a product of the Confederate States Armory, Kenansville, NC See p. 45 of Albaugh's Confederate Swords, Moss Publications, 1979". This relic matches the photo and description listed on Coco's reference. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by a contemporary inscribed label and would make a great display piece for a Confederate, Civil War, or Gettysburg collection.

On this scabbard section, 3¼" down from the throat collar, is a heavy brass sword mount that retains its iron suspension ring. 1¾" beyond the sword mount is the crimped portion that broke off from the original scabbard. Exterior surface of the metal exhibits moderate rusting and has three, ¼" diameter rust holes overall. Never cleaned, the scabbard section wears a light brown patina and a thin film of surface dirt. OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE TIN DRUM CANTEEN FOUND ON THE ROSE FARM - GETTYSBURG

OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE TIN DRUM CANTEEN FOUND ON THE ROSE FARM - GETTYSBURG

This item is an outstanding, rare find, and original Confederate Tin Drum Canteen. Theodore McCalaster recovered it on the Rose Farm, Gettysburg soon after the Battle. It is in excellent condition with attractive original color and has never been cleaned; this is a non-dug item. Made of light gauge tin, all solder joints are tight and secure; it is still airtight and most likely could be used today. It measures approximately 6 3/8 inches round by 2 inches deep and probably holds about 24 ounces of liquid. The spout is firmly and securely soldered to the body and most likely, at one time had a cork stopper. This canteen also comes with the original, heavy, double stitched cloth sling approximately 60 inches long by one inch wide with a roller buckle. The sling ends are frayed from use but otherwise, it is in great condition and has taken on a tan color. The canteen body has only very minor dents and scratches from use; none detract from this wonderful canteen's appearance. The canteen edge has three sling retaining loops all, of which, are intact and unbent. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing. It would make an excellent centerpiece for a Confederate, Civil War, or Gettysburg collection.
