| RELIC "MONUMENT" OF THE ANTIETAM BATTLEFIELD One of the more highly prized relics of the American Civil War! By the turn of the nineteenth century many G.A.R. halls were filled with war-related artifacts either purchased or donated by the membership . And among these post relic displays, none were more popular with members than the distinctive relic pyramids produced between 1880 and 1910. In the fashion of the time, these four sided structures were made of wood, and generally stood four feet in height. The small artifacts lining their sides were usually from a particular Civil War battlefield, and were often identified by item descriptions painted at the time of their construction. With the passing of the G.A.R. and the closing of their halls, these relics pyramids quickly vanished [most likely broken down for individual souvenirs]-and only a few exist today completely intact. This particular "pyramid" features Antietam artifacts and was likely constructed during the mid-1880s to mid-90s. The identity of the person who constructed the pyramid is unknown. It is very similar in structure and appearance to the Gettysburg "relic" pyramids in possession of the Gettysburg National Military Park. Under the base of the pyramid, stamped on the wood is "Hagerstown, MD"; more than likely, the person who constructed the pyramid used any scrap wood available, including packing crates, etc. Overall the pyramid measures 4' 3" in height; the top is 3" x 3", and the base measures 20" x 20" x 5".
