This spent artillery specimen is a Confederate 3", flat-tip Archer Bolt recovered by Mr. Lester Whorly on the Trostle Farm in Gettysburg shortly after the battle. Never cleaned, this heavy projectile exhibits a pleasing, mottled dark brown patina with just a hint of light surface dirt to the exterior. C.S. 4.52" 12-POUND SPHERICAL CASE-SHOT, LEAD SIDE-LOADER SHELL - GETTYSBURG

C.S. 4.52" 12-POUND SPHERICAL CASE-SHOT, LEAD SIDE-LOADER SHELL - GETTYSBURG

Local resident Norbert Ollier found this original, Confederate, 12-pound, spherical caseshot, lead side-loader shell in the fields of the Codori Farm on the Gettysburg battlefield sometime after the battle. The projectile is in very fine condition, complete with its variant brass time fuse adapter and lead plug, all intact. Fully set into the iron shell body is the fuse plug with its 1¼" diameter head flange that exhibits two spanner holes. A close look into the plug reveals a small remnant of the original, cylindrical powder fuse insert. Directly inline with the fuse opening on the spherical side-loader is another opening, 1" in diameter made to take a threaded lead plug which is still tightly screwed into the shell. Small round canister balls (caseshot) were poured into the sideloader shell cavity until filled and then plugged with a threaded plug. Never cleaned, the specimen has a hard surface and wears a light film of rust as well as a wonderful brown patina overall. This 12-pound spherical shell, recovered from the Codori Farm in Gettysburg, is identified by John Geiselman's collection by his museum listings.

U.S. 4.52 INCH 12-POUND SPHERICAL SHOT FOUND ON LITTLE ROUND TOP - GETTYSBURG

Here is an outstanding U.S. 4.52-inch solid spherical shot. Shot rounds such as this were usually fired to ricochet from one target to another causing extensive damage. John Geiselman obtained this relic from the David Plank Collection of Gettysburg Civil War items; it was found in relic condition on Little Round Top. It has an attractive gray/gold/tan patina and has never been cleaned. It weighs 12 pounds, is unfused, and was meant to be fired from a 12-pounder smooth bore gun. There is an indistinct mold seam and a few small impact gashes. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by a contemporary tag and would make an excellent display item for an artillery, Civil War, or Gettysburg collection. It comes with a small (3-½ inch square) stained wooden base (with an old paper price tag of $5.00) from John Geiselman.

U.S. 4.52 INCH 12-POUND COMMON SHELL FOUND ON THE SHERFY FARM - GETTYSBURG

U.S. 4.52 INCH 12-POUND COMMON SHELL FOUND ON THE SHERFY FARM - GETTYSBURG

Here is a very nice fired U.S. 4.52-inch common shell with a Bormann time fuse. Moderately pitted, it weighs 10-½ pounds, is fused, and was meant to be fired from a 12-pounder smooth bore gun. The shell has a nice gray-green patina and has not been cleaned. It has, however, been deactivated; it has a ¼ inch hole drilled into the bottom opposite the Bormann fuse. The Bormann time fuse has a double wrench slot, is set for 2-½ seconds, and still has some threads, numbers, and detents visible. The shell and the fuse have some minor dents and hits from being fired. The Bormann fuse has some minor damage from being fired at the 4 seconds setting. None of these detract from the shell's attractive appearance. After 1862, almost every Federal 12-pounder smoothbore shell fired had a Bormann fuse in it, making this the most common explosive shell of the War. This piece was identified in John Geiselman's collection by a contemporary tag and would make an excellent display item for an artillery, Civil War, or Gettysburg collection.

A rare fragment, seldom do you see a spherical shot split in half. Along one side of the fragment is a large "impact" mark where the projectile struck a hard object. The fragment has light surface grime having never been cleaned. Identified in John Geiselman's collection by his museum listing.
