All of these relics were recovered by lifelong local resident Ed Miller, an individual who is well known to the Small family. Mr. Miller was an active relic hunter from the 1960's into the 1980's. Some of the Confederate belt plates that he dug are featured in Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates, Expanded Edition by Steve E. Mullinax including Plate 008, pg. 14; Plate 173, pg. 99; and Plate 185, pg. 105.

Though difficult to read, scratched into the face of the plate above the letters "US" is the name "John F. Wier". Though Wier was NOT at Gettysburg, somehow he and his belt buckle parted company, with the buckle coming to rest on the fields west of town.
John F. Wier enlisted as a private on 8/14/62 at Rushford, NY, mustering into Co. D, 64th New York Infantry. He was present with his regiment until June 1863, when due to illness he was sent to the camp hospital, being admitted on 6/3/63. Wier's carded medical file yielded the following information. Transferred to the regimental hospital on 6/4/63, and to the division hospital on 6/8. On June 14 he was again transferred, this time to a hospital in Washington, D.C. On an unknown date he was again moved, this time to Philadelphia, where he was in a hospital until 9/4/63. On 11/15/63, Wier was transferred to the 16th Veteran Reserve Corps, where he completed his service, being discharged in October 1865.
Our researcher investigated several other individuals in confirming Wier's identity, but those men either enlisted following Gettysburg, were discharged before the battle, had a different spelling of the last name, or were lacking the middle initial.
