This Model 1917 Officer's cavalry saddle was one of the "new designs" approved by the Cavalry Board of the 1912-1917 period that was credited to William Goodrich, Master Harness Maker at Rock Island Arsenal. It's design is a minor modification of the French Saumur tree saddle used in the French military's riding school at Saumur France. This style saddle was initially manufactured at Rock Island Arsenal until 1920 when saddle production was transferred to the Quartermaster Corps and production began at the Jeffersonville (Indiana) Quartermaster Depot. It is believed all JQMD manufactured saddles were originally equipped with a oval brass tag stamped with the name of the depot, saddle model and date which was tacked under the left jockey. The brass tag is missing but impressions and hole notches indicative of a once present tag. No other markings are present. Overall the saddle appears in very good condition with the leather being quite pliable. Minor scuffing in the leather present with concentrates on the seat cover, right and left jockeys, and along the front seams of the right and left skirts. Seams appear intact with no splits. All rings and loops present.
This particular saddle belonged to Captain John P. Connarn of the 2nd US Cavalry. Connarn was born in 1917 in Brattleboro, VT, graduating from Northfield High School in 1936 and Norwich University in 1941. He joined the Cavalry upon graduation and served during World War II both before and after the Cavalry became mechanized. He served in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Theater. Connarn was severely wounded in France in 1944, and was honorably discharged in May 1945 with the rank of Captain. Following the war he practiced law in Northfield for 12 years, was elected to the Vermont state legislature in 1957 and elected Attorney General of the State of Vermont in 1964. In 1967 he was appointed Judge of the District Court of Vermont and served as District and Superior Court Judge until his retirement in 1985. He owned and operated the Margaret Holland Inn in Northfield until his death. He served on the Northfield School board, was a Scout Master, President of the Norwich University Alumni Association. He was a member of the Sorrell Maynard American Legion Post 63 in Northfield. Connarn died on March 26, 2002.
A letter of authenticity documenting the saddle's provenance will be provided.

Dr. Hirtz of the French Roentgenological Service designed the Hirtz compass. It is a mechanical compass that was designed during WW1 to be used during operations as a surgical guide to better utilizing information acquired by x-rays in location shrapnel. The purpose of the compass was intended to be used in connection with photographic work whereby a permanent record could be made for the later setting of the compass, provided the identifying skin marks were not obliterated. The essential feature of the Hirtz compass is the possibility of adjustment of the movable legs that support the instrument so when resting on fixed marks on the body of the patient the foreign body will be at the center of the sphere a meridian arc of which is carried by the compass.
The compass is enclosed in a 17 inch x 13 inch by 3 1/2-inch wooden box covered with oilcloth. It has two brass hinges and two brass latches. On the top we find Gold lettering in French " Establissements Gaiffe / Compas de Mr Le Medicin Principal Hirtz / pour la Recherche des projectiles". The translation, from the French is: " Establissement Gaiffe (the name of the manufacturer) has provided these calipers belonging to the Chief Medical Officer Hirtz for the locating of projectiles. The inside is covered in tan leather and has compartments for the disassembled compass. The compass is made from brass and steel. It appears that only one small piece may be missing that is identical to the two that are there so it could be reproduced.
Enclosed with the compass is a copy of some pages from MEDICAL WAR MANUAL No 7 which explains how to use it and also has line drawings and photographs of it being used in surgery.
