This Cincinnati Depot Artillery shell jacket has a very nice exterior of dark blue wool cloth with no signs of any moth action. The wool is very clean and all the seams are tight. The red piping on the collar, cuffs and around the edges is complete and intact throughout. The color of the piping is still strong. The back waist has both pillows. The jacket has a twelve button front with two buttons on each side of the collar and two on each functioning cuff. Thirteen of the buttons are reproductions and could stand being replaced.
The interior of the jacket has a nice blue wool lining matching the exterior in color and condition but coarser in the weave. All seams are good. Both sleeves are lined with muslin. The right sleeve lining has two areas of separation. One is approx. 2.00 inches long while the other is approx. 1.25 inches. These are minor and can be repaired if desired. The right sleeve is stamped with three dots for size and a somewhat blurred Cincinnati maker’s mark. Stamped over the dots is an old costume company mark of “U.G.I. SIZE 40.” The left sleeve lining has one area of separation in the armpit of approx. 1.75 inches. Again, this can be repaired if desired. This sleeve is also stamped with “U.G.I. SIZE 40.” The inside of the collar shows some gaps between the seams but this looks to be the way the coat was constructed. The left front side of the lining has a vertical slit pocket.
Overall this is a very nice example of the Union Artillery shell jacket which will certainly display well.
