CARTRIDGE BOX, WAIST BELT AND BAYONET SCABBARD FROG FROM SHIELD’S MUSEUM, GETTYSBURG

$2,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M23726

This .69 cartridge box is in good complete condition but the leather has become stiff and dry from exposure to the elements and age. The outer flap is crackled but has no flaking. There is some surface finish loss along the top edge from age and use. The latch tab is solid but slightly curled. It is attached to the underside of the flap by a single line of stitching. The inner flap matches the outer in condition and is complete with both its ears. The interior has both tins which exhibit some light rust. The implement pocket is present and in good condition. The bottom edge of the box has a round brass finial and both roller buckles. Reverse has both belt loops. The leather exterior body of the box matches the flap in dryness and surface dirt.

The belt is the Pattern of 1856 with the brass keeper and no buckle. The surface finish on the belt is badly worn but the belt is solid.

Also with the group is an eight rivet leather frog from a Pattern 1855 bayonet scabbard. All but one of the rivets are present.

With these items are several tags stating that this cartridge box and belt are from the Shield’s Museum of Gettysburg artifacts. Also with this group is a copy of the catalog from the November 1985 auction with this item highlighted.

Ott Shields amassed one of the earliest and well known collections of Gettysburg artifacts.  In 1918, he opened a private museum that featured the “Shields Collection,” one of the few documented Gettysburg collections obtained by local families (Rosensteel; Danner; Wert; Mumper; Ziegler, etc.).  The Shields Museum closed in the 1980s and the collection was sold at auction on November 16, 1985.  Offering over 600 lots “comprised mostly of Gettysburg battlefield pick-up relics,” the auction attracted several hundred Civil War collectors, dealers, and museum buyers.
