Nice crisp vignette image of a longhaired Custer in a double-breasted frock coat. He is seen in profile looking to his right. The bottom edge of the mount is marked “BRADY” and “NEW YORK.” There is some very light surface dirt on the paper but nothing that detracts.
The reverse of the image has a period pencil inscription at bottom that reads “GEN’L CUSTER GIVEN ME BY HIS WIFE IN 1862.” Back mark is for BRADY’S NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT GALLERIES…NEW YORK & WASHINGTON.
It is not known who the previous owner of the photograph was.
The long and gallant history of General Custer is very well-known and there is no need of repeating it here.
As with any image of Custer it is rare and much sought after and this is a very nice one.
