Item Code: M24192

Very nice conditioned Gettysburg relic desk set made by Edward Woodward who is a well-known as an early maker of these desk sets.

The wood base meas. approx. 6.25 inches long x 3.50 inches wide x 1.00 inch high with a beveled edge. There is no sign of a paper label.

The centerpiece of this set is a large shell fragment topped by a 2.00 inch canister ball. These two items are held in place by a screw which passes through both pieces into the wood and are not glued together.

On each side of the centerpiece is an upside down .69 three ringed bullet. Each bullet has a thick edged base that appears to have caused the bullets being hammered to anchor them to the base. Flanking the bullets and occupying all four corners are small iron canister balls that meas. approx. 1.00 inch wide.

All the relics are in very nice condition.

Edward Woodward moved with his father from England to Baltimore, Maryland in the mid-1850’s. Both father and son were listed as English gunsmiths. After the battle of Gettysburg, Edward like so many people traveled to Gettysburg to view the battlefield. Sometime after this visit he moved to Gettysburg and set up shop as a gunsmith and a dealer of battlefield relics. The first known desk set made by Woodward was dated September 1865.

These relic desk sets are one of the most sought after souvenirs of the battle.
