The exterior of this shell jacket is in good condition. There are scattered moth bites and light tracking over the surface. There is a hole about the size of a dime located on the lower back and three smaller holes on the left side. The red piping on the jacket still retains strong color and is firmly in place throughout. The back has both pillows which are in good condition. The jacket has twelve buttons down the front, two on each functional cuff and two on each side of the collar. All are General Service eagle buttons with plain backs except for two, one is marked “HORSTMANN BROS.” and the other is “SCOVILLE, WATERBURY.” Both of these marked buttons are on the front of the jacket, one at the top and one at the bottom. The lower button on the left cuff has a severe push in the face. The patina on the buttons is uniform. The base of the collar still retains the hook and eye closure attachment. All the seams on the exterior look to be tight with the armpits having small amounts of tack stitching.
The lining is a red plaid wool material which is in very good to excellent condition. There is a pocket in the left breast that is lined with white muslin. Both sleeves are also lined with white muslin. The right sleeve is stamped with two dots for size and the letter “S.” The left sleeve repeats the size marking of two dots and also has the number “2” and “SA” for Schuylkill Arsenal. All markings are strong.
