In remarkable condition, this original, 1863-dated Model 1861 .58 caliber percussion rifle-musket is a contract longarm produced by C. D. Schubarth and Co. of Providence, R.I. In 1862, the firm received government a contract from the US Ordnance Department for some 9,500 such weapons.

The .58 caliber rifle-musket measures 55½” long and has a 40” long, round barrel. All gunmetal, including the barrel and lockplate, retains the original factory bright sheen with just very slight areas of spotty oxidation. Has had just slight cleaning. Musket is complete and retains its original stock, iron nipple and bolster screw, “C” shaped hammer, swell-shanked tulip-head ramrod with threaded tip, all barrel bands, sling hooks, and butt strap. Breech area at the nipple and bolster area reflects no pitting. Barrel has the blued, two-leaf front sight and a front sight that doubles as a lug for the angular socket bayonet. Bore bright with very few light spots of oxidation.

Black walnut stock is in excellent condition overall. A few dings and nicks are visible on the stock. Has no government cartouches. Both stock flats retains sharp edges. Lockplate stamped with the spreadwinged eagle motif in front of the hammer and the date “1863” stamped in back of hammer. Lockplate shows letters “U. S. / C. D. SCHUBARTH / PROVIDENCE” just to right of the eagle. Top flat of breech area deeply stamped “1863.” Strong government proof marks “V / P / eagle head” clearly visible on the barrel’s left facet. Sub-inspector marks are visible on some components, i.e. hammer, barrel, buttplate and bands. An original swelled shank, tulip-head, steel ramrod rests in the groove in the forend of the stock. Rod retains its threaded tip. This original Model 1861 ‘Schubarth’ contract rifled-musket is a minty Civil War longarm.
