Item Code: 172-3435

This scarce, original, Jenks-Merrill percussion carbine is in excellent-plus condition and one of only some 300 arms altered by James H. Merrill of Baltimore, MD. Navy-marked, this rifled shortarm is a wartime example of the Merrill carbine with a 54 caliber, single shot, percussion breechloader as used in the Civil War. Carbine carries serial #18 on the rear bottom of the back action, case hardened breech lever device. Some case remains on lever. Carbine was loaded by pulling back and up on the oval latch assembly that engages the unique two-leaf rear sight graduated for 300 and 500 yards.

Lockplate measures 6½” long including the bolster. Lockplate unmarked save for a small, thin stamp “W.JENKS” at the far left of plate. Full length black walnut stock is fitted to the 24¼” round barrel via two brass bands. Carbine has all brass furniture save the staple and sling ring. Has no patch box. Buttplate marked with “B” on the heel. Maker markings on the exterior top flat of the breech lever, when opened, read “W. JENKS / U S N / R C / P / 1846” and “J. H. MERRILL, BALTO. / PAT. JULY 1858.”

All gunmetal never cleaned and wears a smooth, pleasing plum-brown patina. Carbine features a very fine, dark walnut stock with no cartouches. Stock is in excellent condition and fitted with an iron sling staple and sling ring. All carbine brass exhibits a mellow bronze patina. Barrel bore boasts three-groove rifling with moderate rust pitting; should clean up to semi-bright. Mechanics are crisp and strong. A remarkable condition specimen.
