Item Code: 526-38

This overcoat was manufactured by Amos Clark, whose name is stenciled in the right sleeve lining: “A. Clark/New York,” and boasts the somewhat unusual red wool lining of this maker (Clark had contracts for 90,000 greatcoats between September 1862 and December 1864). It was on this lining that Pvt. Leach stenciled in at least two places:  “A. Leach, 14th Regt. N.H.V.” and also wrote “A.L.” in ink and in pencil in the sleeve lining. Twenty-one year old Pvt. Leach mustered into the regiment on September 22, 1862 for three years and wore this coat his first and last winter in the army. On May 25, 1863 he was sent to Campbell Hospital in Washington, D.C. and died there of typhoid fever six days later.

The top eagle button has been replaced by a black enameled tin trouser button. The collar was clearly worn turned down, folded over halfway down, by Pvt. Leach. The overcoat is in very good condition with some moderate moth damage on the inside rear of the collar; it has a large hole on the left front skirt. This overcoat was originally part of the John Henry Kurtz collection.
