The body of the kepi is in excellent condition. There are two small moth bites on the left front side. These are about the width of a pencil eraser. The left back has some moth tracking but no holes. The color of the cloth is good and not faded. Two parallel rows of bullion tape circle the kepi approx. 1.00 inch up from the base. This tape is also used to outline the disc with two rows and to form a quatrefoil at the disc center. The front, back and both sides are decorated with a 0.25 double line of this tape as well. The front of the kepi has a small embroidered infantry hunting horn insignia made of gold bullion thread and gold sequins. This insignia is sewn on a black felt backing, is very well done and flawlessly sewn to the front of the kepi. The side buttons are three piece US Staff Officer buttons. They anchor a thin black leather chinstrap that has both of the leather sliders. The visor is firmly stitched to the body and has an unbound edge. The surface of the leather shows light to moderate crazing.
The interior has a brown colored sweatband that is approx. 1.50 inches high and is excellent condition. The body of the cap has a brown polished cotton lining in the body while the base of the crown has a black leather base. Overall the lining is in excellent condition.
Faint maker's mark stamped on base of crown appears to read "OAK HALL/ BOSTON" which was the firm run by G. W. Simmons in Boston, Massachusretts. The company was in business from 1835 to 1896 and specialized in made-to-order military caps, overcoats, dress coats. trousers etc...
This is a finely made officer’s kepi and was no doubt worn with some pride by its owner. [ad]
