The body of the cap is made of a dark blue wool that has held its color over the years. The base of the cap has been reinforced with cardboard stiffener sewn into the body around the base of the cap. Stiffener is approx. 1.25 inches high.

There is a seam running up the center of the back with a welt around the base of the disc. The cloth of the body is in good condition but does have some minor problems. First there is a good bit of surface dirt scattered throughout. At the center back bottom edge to the left of the seam, there is a moth hole the size of a pencil eraser with a smaller one approx. 1.50 inches above on the opposite side of the seam. Just below the crown along this same seam is another moth hole and a repaired stress or moth separation. Each is about an inch long. There are also several small areas of moth tracking.

Attached to the disc is a brass Company “I” letter and infantry hunting horn with a number “64” at center. All are regulation size. The chinstrap is complete with the leather slider and brass keeper. It is anchored by two General Service eagle buttons. The visor is slightly convex, it is tightly attached to the cap. The visor has a bound edge with crazing on the top and green lining at bottom. Lining is faded and dry.

Interior has a brown sweatband approx. 1.25 inches wide. It is complete but worn with a number of small tears along the edge and three or four breaks. The lining is black polished cotton and is in good condition except for the area in the front of the cap where it is heavily worn probably from sweat. The bottom of the disc is lined with a thin layer of black leather.

Cap displays nicely.   [ad]
