Eagle head brass guard is in great shape with both folding guards in working order.  Carved ivory grip has one chip below the pommel cap.  Pipeback blade is lightly etched and turning a gray patina.  Obverse blade etch  - NP Ames Cutler Springfield in dry needle / foliate - foliate / stand of arms - liberty cap / eagle - EPU ribbon - rays / foliate.  Reverse blade etch foliate - foliate / stand of arms / United States Navy surrounded by rays / sand of arms - ships rigging / foliate.  Black leather scabbard has some crazing and flaking.  Brass mounts and drag are hand chased and are in great condition.  Overall an early rare sword not normally seen for sale on the collector’s market.
