Occasionally a Cavalry Officer’s Civil War period sabre comes to market that is not a regulation sabre. This ID’d sabre is one that provides us with the many different high grade, high quality manufactured swords by the firm of W. Clauberg of Solingen, Germany. Most of the swords marked by this firm are officer’s presentation grade swords typically with fancy hilts, ornate pommels, scabbards with ornate mounts and finely etched blades.

The most obvious feature of this sword is the very unique fancy brass hilt. While the guards are plain in between is a high quality brass casting cast in a grape pattern. The pommel cap is deeply cast and has chased floral designs with an American wing spread eagle. Grip is covered in shark skin. Quillon has a bust of an eagle head. Very nice bright blade with a single panel of a wing spread American eagle. Reverse side with simple floral design with the “US” in a small panel. Typical firm marking on the ricasso, “W. Clauberg Solingen”.

The scabbard of this exceptional sabre is made of German silver with two ring mounts with simple relief castings on them as well as on the throat. The drag has a deeply engraved American wing spread eagle holding a patriotic shield.

Engraved between the two mounts is as follows: “Presented to / Jacob W. Miller / Baltimore July 16^th 1863 / by his friends of the Monumental City / John H. Boone / John R. English / Benedict Richards / Committee/”.

Battery A Maryland Junior Light Artillery was organized in Baltimore, MD for six months service in July 1863. It mustered out in January 1864. Duty in the Defenses of Baltimore and attended to Artillery Reserves 8^th Army Corps. Lt. Miller enlisted in July 1863. In the fall he was absent sick on leave, present in Nov. and December and until the company mustered out in Jan. 1864.

A nice untouched sword that only needs a minor repair done to the hilt. The ricasso washer is missing which caused the hilt to be loose. Having a washer added would fix the problem.
