This is an original Revolutionary War log hut that features squared and dovetailed timbers with no pins. This method of construction made the hut transportable and reusable.

The structure measures approximately 9’ x 11’ x 6’. The back and side walls stand six courses high. The front wall (utilizing smaller logs) is constructed of seven courses.  The vertical door frame logs are mortised to accept the front wall logs. In a few places where gaps were open, smaller pieces are fitted as “chinking”.  Both adze and hewing marks are prevalent on the timbers, and remnants of whitewash are evident on the interior.

The hut is constructed of “Hard Pine” (related to Southern Yellow Pine), now extinct in New England. Hard Pine originally grew along the coast and particularly on Cape Cod. Used largely in furniture making, this wood was essentially destroyed by agricultural methods.

This hut was discovered in Southboro, Massachusetts by Frank J. Kravic, author of “Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution”.  Southboro served as a rear staging area for troops coming north, to be assigned to the American line at the siege of Boston, April 1775 – May 1776. It also served as a quartermaster depot for goods and provisions for the army at Boston.  Commissary Samuel McClellan operated from here.

This hut is the only one to survive of five or six that were still in existence in the mid-20th century. When discovered in 1974, it was sheathed in weathered red-stained pine boards with a shingled roof, and had served as a tinsmith’s shop in the 19th century.

Comes with letter dated August 18, 1993 from Frank Kravic.  The letter describes the hut and the circumstances of how it was found.  The letter was written for Dean Thomas who acquired the hut at that time.  [jet]
