$3,950.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 945-58

This map of Gettysburg and surrounding Adams County is the version that was utilized by General Robert E. Lee during the Gettysburg Campaign. It was the only large-scale map of the Gettysburg region available at the time of the battle.

Entitled “MAP OF / ADAMS CO. / PENNSYLVANIA / FROM ACTUAL SURVEY BY / G.M. HOPKINS C.E. / 1858”, printed in lettering of varying sizes and styles. Published by “M.S. & E. CONVERSE”, “517, 519, 521 MINOR St. / Philadelphia”.

In excellent condition, this map has been professionally conserved with acid free linen on the reverse; the wooden bars, painted black, are original to the map. No visible rips or tears; there are small scattered areas of staining; one large stain in the shape of an inverted “V” extends downward from the top edge near the left side, but does not greatly detract from the map’s appearance and does not obscure any of the map or lettering. The map itself measures 56” x 39”; the lower wooden bar measures approx. 62” in length, while the top bar is approx. 58” in length.

Surrounding the county map at center are street maps of the various small towns in the county, including McSherrystown, Abbotstown, Heidlersburg, Littlestown, Bendersville, Fairfield, Mummasburg, Arendtsville, East Berlin, New Oxford, Hunterstown, and of course, one of Gettysburg. There is also a Table of Distances, and “Census Table & Agricultural Statistics for 1850”. Also included are several line drawings of significant structures in the area - Pennsylvania College (Gettysburg College), Eagle Hotel, County Prison, the residence of David McCreary, the Lutheran Theological Seminary, the Evergreen Cemetery Gatehouse, Fahenstock Bros. Store, and more.

An excellent opportunity to own a rarely seen piece of Adams County and Civil War history.  [ld]
