Overall this knife measures 14” long. The blade of this knife is in very good condition. Its surface is bright and the edge is near perfect. The surface of the blade has some fine scratches and dull rubbing marks from being cleaned and drawn from the sheath. The blade has a deep clipped point false edge. The blade itself measures approximately 9 ¼” inches long. One side of the blade is beautifully etched with scrolls, patriotic statements, and a spread-winged eagle. The eagle is centered on the blade and measures 2 ¼” wing tip to wing tip. “O.K” is etched underneath the eagle. To the left of the eagle reads “AMERICANS ASK FOR NOTHING BUT WHAT IS RIGHT & SUBMIT TO NOTHING THAT IS WRONG”. To the right of the eagle reads “THE UNITED STATES THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE”.  The opposite side of the blade bears no etching.

A German silver cross guard measures 2 ¾” long x ½” wide x 3/16” thick and features stacked circular forms on the quillions.

The dark horn grips are each anchored by four silver rivets to the full tang. One side has a long silver plate on which is engraved “James Skirm / New Brunswick N.J.” The horn grips are pitting from insect damage. The side with the silver identification plate, luckily, shows only minor damage. The opposite grip suffered more damage and is quite pitted around the edges. The pommel is made of bone pinned to the tang. It is believed that this knife was a product of Woodhead, or Woodhead & Hartley.

The sheath is made of pasteboard covered with thin leather and has a German silver throat and tip that matches the guard in color and age. The red leather surface of the sheath is highlighted with gold embossing. The sheath shows moderate wear. There are various scuffs and soiled areas; splits along each edge of the sheath were recently very nicely repaired. The frog “button” is present on the throat.

Private James Skirm was mustered into Company D, 28th New Jersey Infantry, in September 1862. This nine-month regiment suffered heavy losses in the assault on Marye’s Heights at Fredericksburg and was again engaged at Chancellorsville. Skirm mustered out on July 6, 1863.

Overall this knife and sheath are extremely attractive and have appealing patriotic etchings on the blade. This is a perfect example of an identified personal “Bowie knife”.  [jet]
