$57,500.00

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 941-01

This artillery tube, next to the US 3 inch Parrott tube, was the most widely used rifle cannon during the American Civil War. Manufactured of wrought iron under John Griffen’s patent, of which The Horse Soldier has an original copy along with documents written by Griffen. See inventory number 272-204 on the web site for further information about the patent.

Manufactured at the Phoenix Iron Company in Phoenixville, PA. The company manufactured over 1,100 of these cannons for the US Army, each marked on the muzzle’s end. This tube has the inspector’s initials “TTLS”, the registry number “81”, the weight “819 Lbs”, foundry’s name “PICo” and the year of manufacture “1861”. All markings sharp and visible. “US” between the trunnions is also sharp and crisp. One trunnion is marked “Dec 9th 1862 / Patented” and the other is marked “Phoenix / Iron Co.”

This tube is in very fine condition; the wrought iron is perfect with a smooth surface. On a reproduction full scale Jeff Stafford manufactured carriage. The rifling inside is very strong!

A choice US 3 inch Ordnance rifle on a carriage in excellent condition.

The Ordnance gun is off sight; special arrangements must be made to view the tube before coming to Gettysburg.
