The Sharps rifle, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is a very nice example of the New Model 1863 Sharps rifle that features serial # C,33884.

Rifle has a 29½” long round barrel and a “straight-breech” type lockplate fitted to its walnut shoulder and fore stock. Barrel address is worn but reads “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” in front of rear sight. “NEW MODEL 1863” stamped to rear of sight. Flip-up rear sight is complete and retains clear Lawrence patent stamp underneath. Barrel retains original blued color with smooth, clean surface. Bore with is near spotless with excellent rifling.

The receiver shares similar condition with original case colors. Maker marks and patent designations clearly stamped on left and right sides. Right side of lock features Sharps and Lawrence patent marks. Left side has a very worn Sharps patent stamp. Serial number is visible on the upper receiver tang.

Breechblock and lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics are crisp. Iron components match in color and great condition. Screwheads are in good condition and are blued. Iron patch box is in butt stock and also shows some case colors.

All wood has original deep, rich color. A few scattered dings. Two clear inspector cartouches are visible.
