Item is a WW2 commercially manufactured leather A-2 jacket.

The exterior is in overall good condition and though it is not Government Issue it has all of the same features. The front has an operating “TALON” marked zipper which is correct for the period. Lower front has two snap pockets with pointed flaps. Front tips of the collar snap down to the jacket. There is a hook under one side of the front but the eye on the opposite side is missing.

The leather surfaces of the front show some light wear from rubbing in the area of the pockets and shoulders. The outer edge of each sleeve also shows some rubbing and surface finish loss but nothing major.  All seams are good with no splits

Back panel is one piece of leather and is clean. Fold down collar shows some heavier wear in the neck area but is otherwise good.

Knit waistband and cuffs are of the same color and material as found on issue jackets. The waistband is in excellent condition. One cuff has edge wear while the other has a moderate snag or tear but nothing that detracts.

The interior lining is of the same brown cloth material as on issue jackets. There are three small areas of stress separations in the neck but this is usual and very minor. In the neck is a period printed cloth label that reads “A-2 FLYING JACKET.”

Jacket has the appearance of having been worn. In the pocket is a note from the previous owner stating that the jacket was purchased at the Gettysburg gun show in October of 2017. The note goes on to state that the dealer who sold it had the jacket for over 17 years and that he got it from a college professor. The original owner was a crewmate of the professor’s father.

This is a good jacket for anyone interested in WW2 aviation and is more affordable than the painted examples. In this writer’s opinion the only difference between this jacket and a Government Issued specimen is the label.    [AD]
