A very good condition 1881 pattern officer’s coat for a lieutenant or captain of staff.

The two rows of seven buttons each is the designated pattern for a company officer and the cuff braid of the 1870s is no longer in use. The buttons have Waterbury Button Company backmarks and are the general staff pattern. The coat is lined with green silk in the chest and skirts, which is in very good condition, though with some fraying and loose stitching at the collar. There is an interior adjusting belt to keep it trim around the waist. The skirts have a decent length. The sleeve lining is striped and the buttonholes are machine sewn. The maker’s label inside the collar is for Jacob Reeds Sons on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. The firm name postdates 1877 and the street address is 1883 and later, all of which supports the dating of the coat. Two small brackets for shoulder knots are present near the collar. Small out brackets near the shoulders are gone, but could be replaced.

The coat shows no moth damage, tears or holes and displays very well. It would be a great addition to a collection devoted to the frontier army and look fantastic displayed on a torso form with regulation belt and insignia. [sr]
