The Colt Model 1849 pocket revolver is one of the most attractive pistols Colt ever made and this 6-shot, 6-inch-barrel example is one of the nicest we have seen in long time. With matching serial number 179136 throughout, this pistol was made in 1860 and survives in remarkable condition.

The backstrap still has lots of it original silver finish down to the heel, where there is rubbing for just the last inch exposing brass with an aged patina. The bottom of the strap retains most of the silver as well, with slivers of brass showing along the edges. The silver on the strap is unpolished, showing a nice patina that leads up to and sets off the blued screw heads on the back of the frame and vibrant case color on the back of the hammer. The varnished grips are very good, fit the metal tightly and show just one small chip at the heel on the right and one small wear spot at the bottom middle, also on the right. The frame shows vivid case colors on the right and left as well, and a crisp stagecoach robbery scene on the cylinder that shows some hints of blue at the rear turning to a thin caramel brown forward, nipples that are not battered, and only a light hint of a drag line.

The barrel has about 70 percent mirror Colt blue finish. On the right there is some finish loss just forward of the forcing cone, above the end of the wedge, and some small areas of loss along the upper edge of the right flat. The top flat has a crisp two-line Colt, Hartford address, with just a little finish loss at the breech along the edge below the stamping. The left side shows very good color with just minor rubbing forward of the cylinder, good blue on the wedge, wedge screw and loading lever screw, with a small spot of finish loss above the latter and one scratch between the two screws. The mid-section has about 50 percent of the blue in patches, which runs out about two inches from the muzzle. As on the right side there is some wear along the edges of the flats.

The loading assembly has vivid case colors, and is correctly numbered on the rammer with the last four digits of the serial number, 9136, and the screw heads have a beautiful thin blue. The left frame has a crisp “Colt’s Patent” stamp, vivid case color and thin blue on the screw heads, which show sharp slots. The triggerguard has lots of silver on the front and the bottom of the loop. The upper sides of the triggerguard next to the frame show some rubbing to the silver, as does the inner grip strap, the natural place where one’s fingers would rub it, which has some thin silver, but shows mostly subdued brass with an untouched, mustard patina.

The Colt pocket was a very popular arm. A successor to the “baby dragoon,” the revolver was made from 1850 to 1873 and Hartford production ran to some 340,000. The weapon was popular with gold-miners, travelers, and during the Civil War with officers, who found a .31 Caliber revolver effective for their needs and a lot lighter to carry. They are a wonderful collecting sub-group of Colt arms and this one is a superior example that would be a step-up in just about any collection. [sr]
