This is a post-Civil War view of Robert E. Lee; possibly his 1869 sitting. This is a bust view of Lee in profile, wearing a dark civilian frock coat. Clearly signed in pen & ink at bottom, “R E Lee”.
Backmark is of “Alex Gardner” in Washington, DC. Some of backmark is obscured by old glue and paper. Currently mounted with black mat in modern frame.
