Twenty-three year old William H. Bass, who was born in Charleston, SC, enlisted as a Hospital Steward in the 6th NY Cavalry on 10/31/61 at New York City. Bass was present with his regiment for all of their early campaigns – Peninsula, Seven Days, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg & Chancellorsville. In the latter battle, Bass was captured at Chancellorsville, VA on 5/3/63 and confined at Richmond until his parole at City Point on 5/14/63. Bass was exchanged and back with the 6th NY in mid- to late-June 1863. Bass returned to his unit in time for the Battle of Gettysburg. Camp Parole has him listed as present on May 18 & 19, 1863. There is also a 7/24/63 date on the POW memorandum form, but company record books have him present for July.

On 12/15/63 Bass re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer. He was captured again at Kernstown, VA on 8/14/64 and was again confined at Richmond and paroled on 10/8/64. After release he was put in the U.S. General Hospital in Annapolis, MD, where he stayed until February 1865 when he was sent to a remount camp in Pleasant Valley, MD. On 6/17/65 he was transferred into Field & Staff, 2nd New York Provisional Cavalry. Bass mustered out on 8/9/65 at Louisville. He died in New York City on 9/20/74 at the age of 33 and is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.

Accompanied by military records & pension records from the National Archives.  [ld]
