HIGH HUMP RICHMOND RIFLE-MUSKET DATED 1862

$5,500.00 SOLD

Item Code: 1000-370

Having captured the Federal Arsenal at Harper’s Ferry the Confederates removed the machinery to Richmond where this weapon was made. The type of lockplates produced by the captured machinery shared the same profile as the US model 1855 lockplate that featured a raised hump at the top which would later be milled to add the Maynard tape primer system. The Confederates did not utilize this system in their own production of the lockplate but left the raised area. Thus the “hump” configuration of the lockplate.

The weapon has an overall measurement of 55 ¾”. Its round .58 caliber barrel measures 40” long. The barrel surface is dark gray/brown and is heavily pitted in the breech area. The rear sight is missing but the proper Richmond T-shaped mortice is present. The front sight is present but somewhat beat down. No markings are visible at the breech end due to the heavy pitting. Bore is dark and crusty.

Lockplate shows moderate surface pitting along the top which lessens toward the lower half. Nipple, bolster, and cleanout screw show wear and pitting. Still very visible and strongly marked forward of the hammer is “CS” over “RICHMOND, VA.” Behind the hammer is “1862”. Action remains crisp and works as it should.

All other gun metal parts show matching dark color and pitting. Unmarked butt plate may have slightly more pitting. Nose cap is well patinaed brass. Full length ramrod (with swell) is present; threads are about gone. Barrel bands, band springs, and swivels are all present.

Walnut stock is a true Richmond stock. Stock has nice lines and is in overall good condition. There is the usual wear along the ramrod channel and numerous small dings, dents and scratches from hard service.  Nice original color and finish.

A solid example of a true Confederate manufactured weapon that saw hard use.  [jet]
