The broadside opens with a head-line that reads "ATTENTION, / ARTILLERYMEN! (over spread eagle). It goes on to advertise for 80 able-bodied men for the 12th Battery Michigan Artillery. It advises young men to "Fall In!…Don't wait to be Conscripted…" and offers "$90 PAID DOWN, and $75 at the expiration of service". Dated "April 12, 1863…. E.G. Hillier, Captain, Recruiting Officer." The Broadside exhibits fold-marks and light soiling. Else VG plus, and handsomely framed.
The 12th Battery of Michigan Artillery was designated Battery "M" Michigan Light Artillery upon completing its organization on June 30, 1863. Under command of Captain Hillier it left Dearborn July 9 for Indianapolis, which was threatened by the Confederate raider, John Hunt Morgan. Battery M was subsequently assigned to Wilcox's division of the 23rd Army Corps and was eventually posted in the Cumberland Gap, where it served through the remainder of the war. Mustered out in Michigan in August 1865, the battery lost during service three men killed and 15 by disease for a total of 18.
An utterly superb Michigan recruiting broadside. Exceptionally rare.
