The body of the kepi is in excellent condition. There is not a moth hole or nip on it. Bullion tape circles the kepi approx. 1.50 inches from the base. This tape is also used to outline the disc and to form a quadrifoil at the disc center. The front, back and both sides are decorated with a 0.25 wide piece of this tape as well. The front of the kepi has an embroidered gold bullion wreath made of dead and bright bullion with a silver bullion thread “NY” at center. This insignia is very well done and flawlessly sewn to the front of the kepi. There are no side buttons but one small New York “Excelsior” button comes with the item. A heavy piece of bullion cord is attached as a chinstrap. This is pinned in place and has frayed at the ends. The visor is stitched with a bound edge. It is holding firmly in place and exhibits only light wear.
The interior has an “ox-blood” colored sweatband. It shows signs of use but it is completely intact. The body of the cap has two linings. The underlining is brown polished cotton while the outer lining is purple cotton. Both have come loose around the front and the left side. There is also a small tear in the lining just above the sweatband at the front. The purple outer lining has some stress separations and discoloration from use. Both the inner and outer linings are gathered at the top leaving a hole at center exposing the base of the disc. This visible section of the disc is lined with material to match the sweatband.
This is a finely made officer’s kepi and was no doubt worn with some pride by its owner.
