U.S. 3” TYPE-2 HOTCHKISS COMMON SHELL

$295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 5-82

Produced by the Federal Ordnance Department, here is a fired Type 2 Hotchkiss percussion shell in very good plus condition complete with its base cup, lead sabot, and the its brass time fuse adapter in the nose. This 3” Hotchkiss shell appears to have been fired from a Parrott gun as indicated by the marks on the sabot.  Entire shell is coated with a clear shellac material. Iron base cup is intact and complete with light surface rust pockmarking. Three deep flame grooves cut through the body, the sabot and the base cup. Sabot is strong and intact and exhibits the effects of the barrel rifling. Bottom of the base cap shows no remains of the standard lettering due to rust erosion but does have a small hole where the shell was diffused. Iron body of the cylindrical shell has acquired a dark patina. Length: 6½”; diameter: 2¾”. A fine Federal artillery collectible.
