U.S. 24 POUNDER CANVAS SPONGE COVER

$95.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 731-67

Presented here is a seldom seen example of an original Federal Civil War artillery sponge cover. This artillery accoutrement is a canvas sleeve-like device designed to fit over and protect the cylindrical sponge head attached to the artillery rammer wooden shaft. The sponge-end of the artillery rammer usually had a 9” long crude sponge made of wool fleece on course muslin material backing wrapped two or three times around the wood shaft end. In excellent original condition, this canvas cover appears lightly used and is a clean, light beige color.  Some light surface grime in spots. Device laid flat measures 12” long and tapers outward from the top 7” diameter to a 9” base.  Stamped clearly in black ink on one side is: “U. S. / 24 PDR GUN” in 1” high black letters. This complete relic sponge is a wonderful, seldom-seen tool of the Federal long arm branch and would enhance any heavy artillery display or collection.
