This unfired example of a Confederate 12lb spherical shell was recovered near “The Crater” at Petersburg. It is most likely from Pegram’s Battery which was posted in Elliott’s salient which was located right over the mine explosion of July 30, 1864.
The exterior of the shell has been cleaned of all rust and now has a mostly smooth surface with light to moderate pitting. The raised mold seam at center is partially visible. Remains of the fuse plug are still present in the nose but the paper time fuse is gone.
This is a very nice clean example of a Confederate 12lb shell from one of the more interesting sites at Petersburg.
