U.S. 3” TYPE-2 HOTCHKISS COMMON SHELL

$225.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 727-301

Produced by the Federal Ordnance Department, this artillery round is a fired, Type 2, three-inch Hotchkiss percussion shell in good condition. Projectile body retains its base cup, its lead sabot band and its wood time fuse adapter in the nose. No paper fuse. This Hotchkiss shell appears to have been fired from a rifled 6-pounder Ordnance gun. Lead sabot band is solid and intact and exhibits distinct rifling from the gun tube. Shell is uncoated and is heavily rusted. Three deep flame grooves cut through the body, sabot and the base cup. Due to rust pitting, just traces of the patent stamping is visible along the outer edge of the base. Round is diffused. Iron body of the shell has acquired a dark mottled brown patina. Length: 6¾”; diameter: 2¾.” A great Federal artillery collectible.
