This early, pre-Civil War projectile from the Hotchkiss foundry in Sharon, Connecticut, is a very rare, unfired, un-dug, 1860 Hotchkiss Prototype flat-based bolt. Seldom seen, this bolt evolved from the inventor’s earlier flat-based model patented on July 24, 1860, and was developed during the winter of 1860-1861. Bolt body is in excellent overall with its flat base cup, but missing its lead band sabot. Pre-war patent dates stamped on the flat bottom base cup are not visible. Bolt measures 6¾” in length with a diameter of 3.67” and weighs 8 pounds. Made with no fuse adapter opening at the nose area to accept a fuse adapter. Projectile surface is smooth and hard with no flaking or rust pocking but the body does have two small edge blemishes along the very bottom edge. Exterior of this cylindrical shell exhibits a pleasing dark plum patina. Specimen also exhibits a slight 3/8” wide raised ring on the bottom of the flat base side. No flame grooves cut through the body or base cup. A rare, pre-war Hotchkiss 3.67” 1860 prototype bolt.
