The surface of this bolt has light pitting throughout that gets heavier as it moves toward the nose. In this area it would be considered severe with minor material loss. The pitting does not distort the shape of the shell and both the upper and lower bourrelets are clearly visible.
The sabot is a high copper ring which has two small bends in the edge that look to be from having been fired.
This style of Read bolt was manufactured at the Selma Arsenal in Selma, Alabama and was meant for use in a 3.3 inch rifled cannon.
