Brown leather box in good condition. Leather shows some signs of use but is still very supple. Outer flap is shield shaped with single line stitching that holds the latch tab in place. Tab is creased from age but solid. The face of the outer flap has some dark staining just above the line of stitching. Each stain is about penny size with a tiny pinhole at center. Some of these stains are interlocking and form more of a blob. The area effected meas. approx. 3.00 x 1.50 inches. The interior flap is in matching good condition with both ears intact. The face of this flap is well marked “WATERTOWN ARSENAL 1864” in three lines. The body of the box matches the flaps in condition. Reverse has two sewn belt loops that show some moderate wear at center. This wear is only light creasing and some minor finish loss. Very nice example of an important Civil War artillery accoutrement.
