In the field artillery, pass boxes were used by an individual gunner to carry live artillery-cartridges from a service-magazine to the piece, dryly and securely.
This leather box is cylinder shaped, and has a leather sling as a handle. Sling has an iron buckle for adjusting the length. Box is marked with, “12 PDR LIGHT”.
This measures 11 ½” high x 5 ½” in circumference. Entire sling measures 35”.
Leather has some slight crazing but is supple. Stitching is tight. Leather strap on top of lid is missing, as well as one of the straps on the side of the lid, which is meant for holding the long sling in place.
