Dovetail construction shipping crate designed to hold an 8 inch spherical naval shell, dated 1864. Crate measures 10” by 10” by 10”. Original stenciling is legible and reads “8 – INCH SHRAPNEL. 10 SEC. ORD. 1864”, and includes a naval anchor symbol. Lettering measures approximately 1 inch high. Original rope handles are still intact. Overall condition is good; there are some scuffs and splitting in the wood, including one large split that runs the entire length of the bottom, but these are consistent with the age of the piece. Crates like this are rarely seen on today’s market, because most of them were used for firewood, temporary grave markers, etc. A very interesting Civil War naval piece.
