This is a Civil War artillery gimlet which was used to remove broken friction primers or other obstructions from the vent hole of a cannon tube.

Wood handle retains much of its original finish with no cracks. Iron shaft is still tightly attached to handle and has light surface rust. Threads are good. Measures 5” long. Handle measures 3” wide.    [sm]
