Paper tube measures approx. 18 ½” in length, ¾” in diameter. Seam along length securely fastened. Slight staining to paper. The naval portfire was used as a source of ignition to fire guns. They were long tubes containing a combination of Saltpeter 666 parts, sulphur 222 parts, and mealed gunpowder 112 parts. Typically, portfires were packed in boxes in quantities of 100 or 200.
