Black leather cylinder with top & lid strap, & long buckled carrying strap. Measures 12.25” in height, 4.25” in diameter at the base. Case leather is very good, with slight cracking & wear but nothing major. Straps intact and in good condition, displaying a bit more wear than the cylinder. Stitching excellent. No visible markings.
Naval light “chase” guns were generally mounted at the vessel’s bow or stern. They were the responsibility of the “Powder Boy” who would bring the powder to the muzzle in a “passing box” when the gun had been sponged and was ready to receive the cartridge.
The pass box was also used on land. Several members of a Landing Party would carry a single shell in one of these leather cases.
Fine display piece. Superb CW naval artifact. [ad]
